For a limited time, hikers and equestrians have special access to the northwest portion of the Ramona Grasslands County Preserve – an area that is closed the rest of the year to protect sensitive bird species during breeding season. The tours, led by volunteer docents and park staff, run from 9 a.m. until noon.
Each 6-mile (round-trip) excursion provides a unique look at
local history, plants and wildlife. Tour guides will answer questions
about the preserve, and share information on resident raptors.
There is no cost to participate but spots are limited; you must register in advance. To register, call 877-565-3600 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. You can also review available space by clicking HERE and typing “Ramona Grasslands” in the search field.

Ramona Grasslands County Preserve is located in the unincorporated township of Ramona, west of State Route 67. There is no street address, but there is a gate and there are signs for parking.
NOTE: Tours DO NOT depart from the trailhead; see directions below.
From San Diego: Take Highway 67 north to Archie Moore Road. Archie Moore Road turns into Highland Valley Road, then turn left on Rangeland Road. Look for tour leaders and off-street parking at the end of the road.
From Escondido: Take Highland Valley Road east, and turn left on Rangeland Road. Look for tour leaders and off-street parking at the end of the road.
Please plan to arrive by 8:30 a.m. Tours start promptly at 9 a.m. Once the tour has begun, the gate will be closed and locked.
Sorry, because of the sensitivity of this natural habitat, dogs are NOT allowed.
