Franklin Delano Roosevelt once said, “We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future.” That’s the ideology behind a new program managed by County Parks in conjunction with other cities across San Diego.
SD Nights – short for Safe Destination Nights – provide safe places where teens can recreate during critical hours.
Activities are designed to educate and entertain while
equipping teens with essential life skills and empowering them to make
a difference in their communities.
Research indicates youth who are busy after school and in the early evening are less likely to seek negative behaviors, like drinking alcohol, doing drugs, or participating in criminal activity or gangs.
Environment plays a big role in teens’ decision-making process. By providing them with opportunities to participate in something positive and productive, we can help influence their lives and the community members they will become.
SD Nights launched in Spring Valley 2017. The program has since expanded to nine additional locations – amply staffed and with an agenda full of venues, games and discussion topics.
Staff also benefit from the program; in addition to earning a paycheck and building their resumes, they also gain valuable leadership experience.
Some 300 events will take place every year.
