After more than a decade of free, family-friendly movies in parks after dark, our Summer Movies in the Park program will take a brief break. This is a temporary measure due to COVID-19, and one that will allow us to brainstorm ideas to make the 2021 season bigger and better than ever!
A lot has changed over the past few months. Programs we have hosted for years have been put on hold or canceled, based on recommendations from public health officials and to ensure a healthy, safe and thriving San Diego community.
We all have a role to play, and we’ve had fun defining what that means for County Parks and Recreation programming. With the launch of our Virtual Recreation Center we’ve introduced dozens of activities that bring parks to you – things you can enjoy at home, via your favorite mobile or desktop device.
Summer is typically when our nighttime programs flourish – things like sunset hikes, star parties and Summer Movies in the Park. Alternative, virtual versions of those same events are in the works, and we look forward to sharing them with you soon.
The standard Summer Movies in the Park series will not take place in 2020. For 12 years, we’ve been planning, sponsoring and hosting free, family-friendly movies in the great outdoors…. 1,031 movies, to be exact, at 122 park destinations where more than 336,000 people set down blankets, lawn chairs and picnics.
This year, in light of the coronavirus, we’ve made the decision to “press pause” on our normal campaign, giving us time to refresh the program – keeping what we love, removing what we don’t, and adding some new elements to get us where we need to be to welcome you back in 2021.
In 2020, Summer Movies in the Park will be presented
virtually! Instead of live movie events, we are designing
interactive kits with suggested movie titles and fun activities you
can complete at home. New titles will be shared every week for 6 weeks
with a chance to win cool prizes, compliments of our series title
sponsor Rose SD Realty. We look forward to sharing details
about these kits, soon! Bookmark our website and check back for
updates.

Finally, thank you, San Diego, for your continued patronage. See you in 2021!
